Chevron, Texaco Accept American Express Prepaid Cards at Pump

SAN RAMON, Calif. -- All Chevron and Texaco locations made it easier for consumers to use American Express Prepaid currencies when pumping gas. Chevron Products Co. was the first major gasoline retailer to implement partial authorization at the pump, the company stated, allowing the prepaid currency to be approved at the pump.

The cards' balances can now be checked and displayed at the pump. Previously, at-the-pump authorization required the cards to hold a higher dollar amount than the merchant's pre-set authorization limit. Since the retailer's pre-set authorization amount often exceeds the balance on the card, customer's prepaid cards were declined. When this happened, card holders -- such as American Express Prepaid Cards, American Express Gift Cards and American Express Traveler Cheque Cards -- were required to go into the store to purchase gasoline.

With the new program, gasoline purchases can be completed at the pump, where the card readers authorize the purchase based on the balance remaining, the company stated.

"The timing is perfect since gift cards are growing in popularity," said Danny Roden, vice president of Chevron North America marketing. "Our ability to accept American Express Prepaid Cards at the pump at Chevron and Texaco locations will bring added convenience to our customers and incremental sales to our network of stations."
