Casey's Rebranding Hits Cedar Rapids Truck Stop

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Casey's General Store has big plans for the only truck stop in town. Under the plan, the convenience store chain will add regular gas and the company's fast-food concept to the Just Diesel location near the Wright Brothers Boulevard exit on I-380.

According to Eastern Iowa Business,Casey's intends to demolish the existing 2,295-square-foot building and replace it with a 6,631-square-foot one. The number of parking spots will also be bumped up from 55 spaces to 132. The site will resemble a large convenience store with a diesel fueling island for trucks separate from the other fueling stations, explained Bill Walljasper, chief financial officer of Casey's.

"We have several of these in our markets, including Osceola and Stewart," he added.

Walljasper told the news outlet that redevelopment of the property will begin in the fall pending regulatory approvals. Casey's has not set a completion date as of yet, but he explained that the project will take longer than others because of the scope of the work.

The Cedar Rapids Planning Commission gave a collective thumbs up to the preliminary development plan on April 28, with 12 conditions recommended by the city's community development department. One such condition calls for Casey's to submit a traffic signal petition for the intersections of Pester Drive and Capital Drive with Sixth Street SW, and pay for a portion of the costs associated with the future traffic signals. The community development state still needs to give approval to the final site plan.

Just Diesel was formally part of the Nordstrom Oil family. Nordstrom Oil operated the Handimart convenience store chain. It sold more than 30 stores to Casey's in 2007 for approximately $63 million, including this location. Just Diesel is one of the last to be rebranded as Casey's General Store, according to Eastern Iowa Business.
