BP's A+ for Energy Rewards Chicago Teachers

WARRENVILLE, Ill. -- BP's A+ for Energy initiative will award 94 innovative Chicago-area teachers for their energy conservation education programs by distributing $1 million in grants and scholarships to develop new projects for students.

"We are extremely pleased to recognize some of Chicagoland's top teachers, whose creativity in the classroom both inspires and encourages students to be good energy consumers," Doris Salomon Chagin, BP community affairs director for the Midwest, said in a written statement. "The A+ for Energy program reinforces BP's longstanding commitment to quality education. We are actively engaging with communities where our employees live and work, helping to enhance education, encourage enterprise development and promote alternative energy solutions."

The teachers selected by the program receive financial support for classroom, after-school, extra-curricular or summer activities that promote energy education and conservation, according to the company. Award recipients will collect $5,000 and $10,000 grants, according to the company.

In addition to the grants, BP will provide winners with a scholarship to attend a three-day energy training conference, sponsored by the company and presented in partnership with the National Energy Education Development Project. The scholarship will over the cost of travel, meals, lodging and instructional materials.

A+ for Energy winners will be honored at a special ceremony at the Museum of Science and Industry at 6 p.m. Thursday.
