BP, Hess Donate Millions to Support Hurricane Victims

HOUSTON -- As the Gulf Coast continues to recover from the latest round of hurricanes, organizations including the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and the United Way will receive an $8 million pledge from BP and its employees.

"BP shares the nation’s concern for those hit so hard by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav," Bob Malone, chairman and president of BP America, said in a statement. "As we work to return our offshore oilfields and Texas City refinery to full operation, we are also working to help communities and organizations like the American Red Cross provide assistance to the people who need it most. We hope that our contribution—along with those of millions of Americans—will help sustain a disaster response sure to last many months."

As part of the effort, the BP Foundation will match employee contributions on a one-to-one basis up to $1 million.

In related news, Hess Corp. will donate $3 million to the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund.

"We are deeply concerned for the welfare of the people suffering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike in Houston and the Gulf Coast," John Hess, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Hess, said in a statement. "This fund, created by Houston Mayor Bill White, will help fill the unmet human needs of hurricane victims in Houston, as well as Harris and Galveston counties and other affected areas. We appreciate the heroic efforts of emergency personnel and all those who have responded to this tragedy."

In addition to its donation, Hess, like BP, offered a matching gift program for employees who wish to make a personal contribution. Under the campaign, Hess will match every donation employees make to the Hurricane Ike relief efforts by the American Red Cross, the United Way of Houston, the Salvation Army and the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund.
