BP Awards $45,000 in D.C. Area Scholarships
WASHINGTON -- BP America, in partnership with BP and Amoco independent retail owners and operators, will award $45,000 in scholarships to 33 high school graduates and college students who reside in the greater metropolitan D.C. area, including Maryland and Virginia. The scholarship recipients will be recognized at an awards ceremony to be held on June 29 in the Mansfield Room at the U.S. Capitol.
A diverse group of students was selected to receive BP community scholarships based on personal essays, academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, individual goals and demonstrated financial need. Among the 2004 recipients are five winners of BP's Freedom Award Essay competition, and the winner of the 2004 BP Charles Lamb scholarship.
BP employees and dealers began the D.C. Community Scholarship Program in 1998 as a way to invest in the success of youth in the neighborhoods where BP operates. Now in its seventh year, the BP Community Scholarship Program has provided $380,000 in scholarships to more than 330 promising students who reside in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. BP initiated the Freedom Award Essays in recognition of those lost on 9/11.
