'Bad Gas' Issue at Connecticut 7-Eleven Resolved
MONTVILLE, Conn. -- 7-Eleven Inc. found no evidence of contamination following reports of "bad gasoline" sold at its Montville, Conn., location, according to a Norwich Bulletin report. The state does not dispute 7-Eleven's findings.
The convenience store retailer said its insurance company notified it about the issue on June 10, after which it immediately launched an investigation. Connecticut authorities are reportedly investigating the Montville 7-Eleven, located on the Norwich-New London Turnpike, and six other gas stations along the I-95 corridor. Most are Mobil-branded locations.
"We now understand that the product-quality issue was far more widespread and involved many other, non-7-Eleven gasoline locations," the company said in a prepared release. "We found no evidence of contamination at our store at that time. The contaminated product had already been dispensed into customer vehicles and non-contaminated product delivered and dispensed at that same location before we learned about the issue and conducted our investigation."
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection took samples from the Montville 7-Eleven on June 16 and found no contamination, according to the c-store chain.
"The 7-Eleven statement is not inconsistent with what we have said about our investigation," stated Claudette Carvath, consumer protection department spokeswoman.
"We believe there is no longer a gasoline product quality issue at this location, and we are not aware of any existing gasoline product quality issues at our other Connecticut stores," 7-Eleven said. The company is working to settle the claims of 11 vehicles that were repaired at Norwich auto dealerships following the gasoline sales.
"We have been working with the source from which our gasoline is delivered, and our insurer will process documented customer claims," the company added.
Drivers who experienced an issue with fuel purchased at the Montville 7-Eleven were instructed to call the company's customer service team.
