Atlas Oil Expansion Creates Jobs

TAYLOR, Mich. -- Fuel distributor Atlas Oil Co. may add up to 40 new jobs, including up to 10 at its headquarters, after it completes the acquisition of 33 gas stations in the Chicago area from BP North America Inc. later this month, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

CSNews Online reported this week the company signed a purchase agreement in early May to acquire 33 BP stations, 13 of which include ampm brand convenience store locations in northeastern Illinois. The sale is set to close in mid-June.

Atlas already purchased 23 sites in northwestern Indiana from BP in September 2008, and 57 more sites in January 2009, according to the report.

"Each acquisition expands the markets in which we can prospect for new opportunities, and we look forward to being able to further develop our relationship with BP by converting additional locations to the BP brand," Mike Evans, executive vice president of business development at Atlas, said in a statement on the purchase.

Karen Johnson, marketing analyst for Atlas, said the expansion is expected to mean new hires for the company in its marketing, accounting, transportation and sales departments, according to the report.

Between five and 10 new people will be needed in accounting, transportation management and other departments in Taylor, and sales staff and drivers will likely will be needed at a regional Atlas office in Granger, Ind., according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

The new hires would increase Atlas’ workforce to nearly 400 employees companywide.
