7-Eleven Joins D.C. Effort to Put Residents Back to Work

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Two new 7-Eleven franchises are set to open their doors in the nation's capital, bringing with them 38 jobs for local residents.

The stores will be located on Benning Road and Bladensburg Road in the northeast section of the district. Each retail site will employ 18 associates and one assistant manager. According to Mayor Vincent Gray's office, 7-Eleven is committed to hiring all of the employees from the neighborhoods where the stores are located.

7-Eleven, as a corporation, also will be working with Gray to identify district residents in the pool of applicants who have an interest in becoming a franchise owner. To that end, the mayor and 7-Eleven executives were on hand at the D.C. Department of Employment Services headquarters this morning to greet job applicants.

The mayor also thanked the c-store giant for being part of his "One City - One Hire" program. The initiative is an employer-driven hiring initiative with the goal of putting district residents back to work. One City - One Hire is an economic development strategy that serves as a catalyst to jumpstart Gray's pledge to put all unemployed district residents back to work.
