Kum & Go, PepsiCo Expand Recycling Program

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Kum & Go LC and PepsiCo Inc. expanded their recycling program to include all 47 Kum & Go stores in Tulsa, Okla. The program, launched last January, is designed to encourage and facilitate on-the-go recycling.

PepsiCo recently deployed 275 recycling bins to the Tulsa Kum & Go stores to be placed next to fuel pumps, offering customers easy and accessible recycling opportunities. The bins resemble plastic bottles in order to distinguish themselves from trash containers.

Since the recycling program began, it has successfully diverted more than 6,000 pounds of recyclable materials, or approximately 120,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans, from landfills, according to the announcement.

To honor their dedication to recycling, The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The M.e.t.) of Tulsa is honoring Kum & Go and PepsiCo with its 2013 Recycling Innovator! Award.

"Kum & Go is committed to leading our industry in sustainable practices and being a responsible corporate citizen in the communities that we serve. PepsiCo's strong commitment to promoting environmental sustainability makes them a tremendous business partner, and we're proud to provide a simple and effective way to help customers recycle at every Kum & Go convenience store in the Tulsa area," said Adam Hammes, Kum & Go’s sustainability manager. "It's a great honor to be recognized by The M.e.t. on America Recycles Day, and we look forward to expanding our recycling efforts to help keep recyclables out of the landfill."

The M.e.t. will present Kum & Go and PepsiCo with the annual award at its America Recycles Day Banquet on Nov. 15 at the Tulsa Hyatt Regency Hotel.

"We know that more people are recycling in their homes, but it's on the go that presents a challenge," said Michael Patton, executive director of The M.e.t. "The Kum & Go and PepsiCo recycling initiative addresses this challenge and provides a convenient solution that is greatly benefiting the Tulsa area and truly increasing recycling in a meaningful way."

The PepsiCo Recycling Initiative was introduced on Earth Day 2010 and has the goal of increasing the U.S. beverage container recycling rate to 50 percent by 2018 by providing colleges and universities, K-12 schools, gas stations and popular retail locations across North America with innovative recycling solutions, such as the Dream Machine container collections, Recycle Rallies and more.

Kum & Go operates more than 420 c-stores across Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming.
