NATIONAL REPORT -- Giving back through community service efforts and charity donations is a positive force that keeps many retailers and suppliers of this industry moving ahead. On a regular basis, Convenience Store News highlights these philanthropic efforts in this special section.
Here are the latest company spotlights:
Cumberland Farms Inc.
Cumberland Farms launched its 2014 Cups for Kids campaign, a month-long fundraiser that will benefit pediatric care programs at several hospitals throughout the Northeast.
During the month of August, 5 cents from every iced coffee or Chill Zone beverage purchased at specified Cumberland Farms locations will go directly to the participating hospitals: Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Albany Medical Center, Connecticut Children's Medical Center and Barbara Bush Hospital.
Cumberland Farms kicked off the fundraiser with an event at Fenway Park in Boston on July 30 where patients from each hospital and their families enjoyed a private celebration and tour of Fenway Park before attending the Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays game.
Customers and employees of NOCO Express recently donated $12,213 to support the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County in New York and several other United Ways in the region.
Throughout the month of May, donations of $1, $3 or $5 were collected at all 35 NOCO Express convenience stores through a paper T-shirt pinup campaign.
More than 40 QuickChek employees, including corporate vice presidents and district leaders, lended a helping hand to New Jersey residents still affected by Hurricane Sandy. They helped demolish and rebuild homes in the shore towns of Oceanport and Sea Bright on July 30-31.
With 137 stores throughout the region, QuickChek teamed with Sea Bright Rising to help the more than 200 families who own homes in the area and cannot afford to rebuild on their own.
RaceTrac Petroleum Inc.
RaceTrac Petroleum announced that its cumulative giving to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research has exceeded $1 million. This milestone is due in large part to the continued efforts of the company's team members who have executed various initiatives over the years, encouraging the community to participate in and support the cause.
RaceTrac first partnered with the foundation in 2010. The retailer's chairman, Carl Bolch Jr., was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2007 and currently sits on the foundation's Patient Council.
Now through Sept. 28, Stripes is supporting Texas Operation Military Kids (TOMK) with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of a limited-edition Red Bull Camo Can available at all Stripes locations.
TOMK is the U.S. Army’s collaborative effort with the National Guard, Army Reserves and statewide communities to support children and youth impacted by deployment. The organization's goal is to connect military children and youth who are geographically dispersed with local resources in order to achieve a sense of community support and enhance their wellbeing.
Valero Energy Corp.
Valero's philanthropic arm and a separate foundation maintained by company chairman Bill Kleese are donating a combined $4 million to the nonprofit Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
Valero will give $3 million over a three-year period to the downtown pediatric hospital, while the Klesse Foundation — run by former CEO Kleese and his wife Margie — will give $1 million. Valero's $3-million contribution will go toward the hospital's pediatric cancer program, while the Klesse Foundation's $1-million gift will go to the neonatal intensive care unit.
