Community Service Spotlight: Lykins Oil & Marathon Petroleum

NATIONAL REPORT -- Giving back through community service efforts and charity donations is a positive force that keeps many retailers and suppliers of this industry moving ahead. On a regular basis, Convenience Store News highlights these philanthropic efforts in this special section.

Here are the latest company spotlights:

Aloha Petroleum Ltd.

On behalf of its customers, Aloha Petroleum recently donated $4,443 to the American Heart Association, Hawaii Division, to help the organization empower Hawaii residents to live healthier lives and educate the public on heart disease and stroke.

The funds were raised through canister collection donations at participating Aloha Island Mart and Shell locations across the state.

CITGO Petroleum Corp.

CITGO and the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas recently launched the "Kindling Young Minds" program, aimed at boosting attendance at six Houston high schools. CITGO and the Sheriff's Office identified schools in the Alief, Houston and Spring Branch Independent School Districts (ISD) to receive a total of 60 Kindle Fire tablets this school year.

Each ISD identified two schools that experience high absenteeism to benefit from the inaugural program. The district schools will identify students who have demonstrated either perfect or improved attendance for the semester. From that group, five students will be randomly selected from each school per semester to receive a Kindle Fire tablet. A total of 60 tablets will be distributed among the six participating schools.

The first recipients were recognized before the Christmas holiday break. The second semester winners will be announced in early April.

Lykins Oil Cos.

Through the BP Fueling Communities program, Lykins Oil Cos. donated $12,500 to The Cincinnati Nature Center, the largest member-supported nature center in the country with more than 100,000 visitors a year.

The Fueling Communities program provides grants to local organizations that are nominated by BP-branded marketers to support the communities in which they do business. Lykins Oil is a family-owned and -operated business headquartered in Milford, Ohio. The company represents five major brands: BP, Marathon, ExxonMobil, Shell and Clark.

Marathon Petroleum Corp.

Marathon Petroleum is donating $10,000 to the nonprofit organization, Golf Fore Africa, in honor of LPGA Vare Trophy recipient Stacy Lewis. Golf Fore Africa is dedicated to bringing hope and support to children in Africa who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by the AIDS pandemic. Marathon Petroleum is the parent of Speedway LLC.
