Community Service Spotlight

NATIONAL REPORT -- Giving back through community service efforts and charity donations is a positive force that keeps many retailers and suppliers of this industry moving ahead. On a regular basis, Convenience Store News highlights these philanthropic efforts in this special section.

Here are the latest company spotlights:

Aloha Petroleum Ltd.
Aloha Petroleum recently donated $5,039 to Aloha Harvest in support of the organization’s efforts to feed the hungry in Hawaii. To solicit donations from customers, Aloha Petroleum set up collection canisters at its Aloha Island Mart convenience stores and select Shell locations during the months of May and June.

CITGO Petroleum Corp.
CITGO announced 108 winners in its first-ever Fueling Education promotion with Classwish. A total of 83 teachers, student teachers and PTA/PTO members across 27 states and the District of Columbia each won $1,000 in school supplies for their classrooms. An additional 25 teachers who submitted entries through Instagram will each receive a $100 CITGO gift card and $1,000 in supplies.

The Fueling Education program allowed teachers to create customized school supply lists to address the specific needs of their students and classrooms. Educators were required to register and build their supply wish lists at ClassWish.org from April 16 through July 7. Winners were randomly selected from schools within the CITGO marketing footprint. In addition, teachers who posted a photo on Instagram were eligible to win $1,000 in supplies and a $100 CITGO gift card through a random drawing.

Cumberland Farms Inc.
Cumberland Farms is continuing its 2013 Cups for Kids campaign, with a monthlong fundraiser to benefit The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, Maine’s only full-service children’s hospital. For the month of August, participating Cumberland Farms stores in Maine will donate 5 cents per cup of Chill Zone and iced coffee beverage sales to benefit the hospital.

The funds will support programs and services the hospital provides, such as the expansion of the Child Life Program into the Emergency Department; purchase of GlideScopes, instruments that provide nurses with a clear view of patient airways and allow for quick and consistent intubation; and the purchase of Accuvein devices, which are handheld devices that aid nurses in finding veins beneath the skin.

Over the course of the fundraiser, the participating Cumberland Farms stores will announce the total amount of money raised on a weekly basis so that customers and the hospital can track the fundraiser’s progress. A running total will also be displayed on www.cumberlandfarms.com on a weekly basis.

During its 2012 campaign, Cumberland Farms raised more than $12,000 for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.
