ShopRite Steps Into Discount Fuel Pool

ALBANY, N.Y. -- ShopRite is in the process of converting a Mobil gas station in Upstate New York into its first Capital Region station.

According to the Times Union, the gas station at 651 Central Ave. is currently undergoing renovations, which include new fixtures and a new facade. When it opens in early September, the station will boast 16 fuel pumps and offer gas discounts to the chain's Price Plus Club cardholders.

Columbia Development bought the gas station/convenience store and is leasing the property to ShopRite, according to another report in the Business Review. The deal gives ShopRite its second branded gas station. The first is in Middletown, N.Y.

Tom Urtz, vice president of human resources and community affairs for ShopRite, told the Times Union the company is actively looking to acquire other gas stations.

The September opening of the ShopRite-owned gas station comes just several months before the scheduled opening of a ShopRite supermarket and gas station at 1730 Central Ave. in Colonie, N.Y. When those plans were approved in March village officials stipulated that the grocery chain could not offer discount gas until it was available at other stations. Officials were concerned that if the 14-pump station was the only one offering discounts, customers from other ShopRite stores would drive there for gas, according to the Times Union.

However, Urtz told the newspaper he did not know if Colonie officials would consider the station at 651 Central Ave. enough to allow discounted gas at the location.
