Pilot Flying J Adds Two More to Its Network

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. and SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Pilot Flying J is adding two new locations to its U.S. network of travel centers. The company recently opened a new Flying J Travel Plaza in St. George, S.C., and will demolish and rebuild a Pilot Travel Center on the site of an aging truck stop in Sioux City, Iowa.

The new 13,350-square-foot travel plaza in South Carolina, located at 113 Motel Drive at Exit 77 off Interstate 95 along U.S. Highway 78, offers six gasoline islands, eight diesel lanes, two RV lanes, diesel at the pump and high-speed fuel pumps. Other features include a Denny's restaurant; hot food deli; Western Union and check cashing; an ATM; laundry services; 108 parking spaces for cars; and general merchandise for professional drivers and highway travelers, according to a company announcement. Additionally, RV drivers can access bulk propane and a dump station.

"We hope that St. George-area residents and fleet customers will enjoy the convenience and amenities of our new Flying J Travel Plaza," said Jimmy Haslam, president and CEO of Pilot Flying J. "As the driver-driven company, we are proud that this travel center will serve this community through products and services, as well as contribute to the local economy through jobs and tax revenue. And, we'll fill the needs of those carrying goods to communities across the nation."

Richard Bronson, general manager for the St. George location, said the familiar Flying J sign will be a welcome sight for interstate travelers and professional drivers. “They'll want to pull off to fill up, refresh and sample some of our featured food items like sandwiches, hot pizza and Oscar Mayer hot dogs," he said. "Our premium hot beverages include gourmet specialty coffees from all over the world, as well as Pilot's house coffee, which was named the 'Best Coffee on the Interstate' by the readers of Truckers News. We also have a variety of fountain drinks and fresh-brewed tea."

On-site amenities specifically geared to professional drivers include a CAT scale, eight automated showers, 118 parking spaces for trucks, and driver services such as Transflo and Trip Pak.

Meanwhile, Pilot Flying J will soon begin its renovation of Truck Haven, located off I-29's Singing Hills Boulevard Exit in Sioux City. The truck stop's current owners are nearing completion of a deal with Pilot, according to the Sioux City Journal. On March 1, Truck Haven will reportedly close and be leveled to make way for a new Pilot Travel Center.

The age of Truck Haven and ongoing nearby construction contributed to its decline, said George Gengler, general manager. Plans for the new Pilot Travel Center include multiple fueling stations, a convenience store, two fast-food restaurants and a large truck parking area, according to the report.

Pilot Flying J operates more than 550 locations across the United States and Canada.
