McDonald’s to Introduce Two for $2 Menu in 2016

OAK BROOK, Ill. — McDonald's is doubling down on its Dollar Menu.

Early next year, the fast-food chain will launch the "McPick 2" menu, which will let customers pick two of the following items for $2: a McDouble, a McChicken, small fries or mozzarella sticks, according to The Associated Press.

Franchisees voted to add the offering to the national menu, and it will be available in locations across the United States for a five-week period beginning Jan. 4. After that, McDonald's said it may change the details of the offering, but it plans to stick with the "McPick" concept and name.

Oak Brook-based McDonald's has been making several moves, including adding all-day breakfast items, to help boost slumping sales. The company has also been trying to find a new way to attract deal seekers after moving away from the Dollar Menu, which was introduced more than a decade ago, the news outlet reported.

"As we moved away from the Dollar Menu, we didn't replace it with offers of an equivalent form of value. And customers have voted with their feet," CEO Steve Easterbrook said in July.

In 2012, McDonald's introduced the "Extra Value Menu" in a bid to move away from the Dollar Menu. However, that offering failed to take hold. The company then rolled out the "Dollar Menu & More," which channeled a proven name but may have confused people with its range of prices, according to the AP report.

Deborah Wahl, senior vice president of marketing for McDonald's U.S., said the McPick platform is designed to give people options.

"Customers are looking for choice and flexibility. That's sort of the new definition of value," she said.
