McDonald's, Burger King Introduce New Healthy Items

OAK BROOK, Ill. and MIAMI -- With the arrival of spring, McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Worldwide Inc. are adding healthier items to their menus.

According to a report by the Associated Press, McDonald's Egg White Delight — made with a whole grain muffin, Canadian bacon and white cheddar cheese — will debut nationally on April 22. At 250 calories, the breakfast item is a leaner version of the original Egg McMuffin, which clocks in at 300 calories.

McDonald's, operator of 34,000 quick-service hamburger chains worldwide, said the egg whites will be cooked on the grill with a spatula. Customers can also request egg whites for other breakfast sandwiches.

The company does not stipulate pricing to franchisees, Ofelia Casillas, a McDonald's spokeswoman, told the news outlet, so it remains to be seen whether or not there will be an extra charge for the egg white substitutes.

Meanwhile, Burger King, the operator of approximately 12,000 restaurants in all 50 states and in 73 countries worldwide, is launching its new Burger Fest menu featuring a lineup of 12 menu items including sandwiches, beverages and side dishes.

Topping the menu are two better-for-you options — the Turkey Burger and Veggie Burger.

The fire-grilled Turkey Burger is topped with fresh-cut lettuce, sliced tomatoes, crisp red onion and mayo, and served on a warm, artisan-style bun. The suggested retail price starts at $3.99, according to the company.

The Veggie Burger is made with fresh vegetables and wholesome grains, and is "not just for vegetarians," noted the company. The MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patty is topped with fresh-cut lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, ketchup and mayo, and served on a toasted sesame seed bun. The suggested retail price starts at $2.99.

"Our signature fire-grilled burgers are the foundation of the Burger King menu, and we are excited to offer our guests more variety as we celebrate Burger Fest," said Flavia Faugeres, Burger King’s executive vice president and global chief marketing officer.
