Duane Reade Opens Second Major NYC Store

NEW YORK -- Duane Reade is expanding its presence in New York City's financial district with today's grand opening of its second 'up market' location in the area. The 22,000-square-foot store, located in the American Surety building at 100 Broadway, features exclusive offerings and amenities and an in-store museum quality exhibit, the first at any Duane Reade location.

"The concept-forward store design fits the rich innovative structural history of 100 Broadway while incorporating the best ideas of Duane Reade and Walgreens partnering to create a truly unique store experience," said Michael De Fazio, senior director of store concepts for Duane Reade. "Intricate salad creations have become the main course for many health conscious, on-the-go New Yorkers. As part of the Walgreens family of companies, Duane Reade is reinforcing its highly recognizable, urban-localized brand with the opening of this store; simply put, it's New York Living Made Easy."

New offerings include up market: chop, an ultra-fresh, gourmet salad bar concept that offers the choice of premium greens, artisanal cheeses, 30 additional toppings and an array of dressing options; and up market: cafe and Good & Delish self-serve hot soups. The café offers a full-time barista and the choice of freshly brewed drinks, including specialty beverages, while Good & Delish soups come in eight homemade-like flavors.

Other products that were first introduced at Duane Reade's Wall Street Flagship store are integrated into the Broadway location, including up market: juice, where customers can create their own fresh juice or smoothies, and up market: sushi, a station staffed by an authentic chef that features fresh, custom ordered sushi; sashimi and traditional sides.

Additional major offerings include the up market: Fro-Yo station, which offers eight unique varieties of frozen yogurt and four twists, and up market: freezee, which provides for flavors of frosty beverages.

The store's museum-like exhibit pays homage to the neighborhood with a unique display of world-changing events in U.S. history that have been celebrated down historic Broadway, stated the company. This includes the 1960 John F. Kennedy election, the 1946 Winston Churchill era and the 1969 moon walk.

Duane Reade's pharmacy services, “Powered by Walgreens Pharmacy Network,” enhance customer experience by placing pharmacists out front to actively engage customers.

"This new strategy is a step forward in leveraging the vast knowledge of our pharmacists and making their expertise more accessible to the customer," said Anthony Riso, senior director of pharmacy operations for Duane Reade. "The Walgreens family pharmacists are highly trained professionals who are well-positioned to coach customers in finding the appropriate medications and providing direction on how to take medication. They can also offer guidance on both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. 100 Broadway will be equipped with a private consultation room and Express Rx kiosks allowing customers to quickly pick up refills and pay."

The new store also has the largest Papyrus greeting card section, the company said.

The largest drug store chain in New York City and part of the Walgreen family of companies, Duane Reade operates more than 250 stores in the metropolitan New York region. Its NYC flagship store, opened in summer 2011, won first place in the Convenience Store/Pharmacy category of the Retail Design Institute's 41st annual international awards.
