Fresh & Easy to Temporarily Close 12 Underperforming Stores

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market intends to temporarily close 12 underperforming stores, according to an OC Register report.

"At this time, there is simply not enough growth in sales and customers at these stores to keep them open," said spokesman Brendan Wonnacott. "We will close these stores over the coming weeks and we will re-open them when economic and business conditions warrant."

Seven of the affected stores are located in southern California, four in Phoenix, Ariz., and one in Las Vegas.

Despite reports of struggles in 2011, the grocery chain continues to pursue store growth. At least 24 new stores are planned for the West Coast, some in its smaller Express format. The company also expects to break even by 2013, as CSNews Online previously reported.
