Fresh & Easy Celebrates Earth Day

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- In celebration of Earth Day, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores will be giving away canvas bags to customers on Wed., April 22 when they spend $10 or more. This special giveaway is part of an effort to encourage customers to reuse bags and lessen their impact on the environment, the retailer announced.

"We want to make it easier for our customers to make more environmentally friendly decisions," stated Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy CEO. "If we can get more customers shopping with reusable bags, collectively we can make a big difference. We want to help our customers be part of the solution in reducing single-use carrier bags."

To encourage the use of reusable bags everyday, Fresh & Easy said its stores offers a variety of options including a canvas bag for only 99 cents; a wine carrier canvas bag that holds up to seven bottles for $1.99; a 20-cent reusable plastic bag that will be replaced for free if it is ever torn or damaged; and an organic canvas bag for $2.99.

As a further demonstration of its commitment to the environment, Fresh & Easy reported that it only sells energy-efficient light bulbs, uses LED lighting in external signs and freezer cases, and offers customer recycling in every store. The company also recycles or reuses all of its display packaging, sending the majority back through its distribution center.

In addition, Fresh & Easy is a pilot member of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Volume Certification Program, demonstrating its commitment to build sustainable buildings, and has voluntarily joined the California Climate Action Registry and The Climate Registry to disclose its greenhouse gas emissions.

At its distribution center in Riverside, Calif., the company invested $13 million in a solar roof installation, which provides more than 75 percent of the facility’s energy.
