CVS Joins Gas Discount Arena

WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- CVS/pharmacy is trying to ease consumers’ pain at the pump with its latest promotion offering $10 free gas in exchange for spending $30 in the store.

To reap the benefits of the promotion, customers must look for the “get free gas” symbol that’s on select items throughout the store. After presenting their ExtraCare card when buying at least $30 of qualifying products the customer will receive a coupon for a $10 gas gift card. That coupon can then be redeemed for the gift card, according to the company's website.

CVS’ gas discount program follows on the heels of Walmart's launch of a gas price rollback program with select Murphy USA and Walmart locations. The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer launched its 90-day discount program right before the July 4th holiday. The discount will be applied to gas purchases made when using a reloadable Walmart gift card, reloadable Walmart MoneyCard or Walmart credit card through Sept. 30, as CSNews Online previously reported.

Customers who use Walmart cards to buy gas at participating gas stations will immediately receive the 10-cents-a gallon discount on fuel purchases, with no other restrictions or requirements. States with gas stations taking part in the program are Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
