Royal Dutch Shell Forms BioFuel Research Partnership

September 18, 2008 - THE HAGUE -- In an ongoing effort to support alternative energy, Royal Dutch Shell revealed six new partnerships with academic institutions to research and develop biofuels.

The research agreements, which will take place at academic institutions around the world, will run between two and five years. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Campinas (Brazil) and the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences are among participants.

The emphasis will be placed on investigating new raw materials and biofuels production processes, with a focus on improving efficiencies and lowering costs.

"While biotechnology has traditionally been the preserve of the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, but is poised to expand dramatically over the next few years," Dr. Graeme Sweeney, Shell executive vice president of Future Fuels and CO2 said in a statement. "CoEBio3 is extremely excited at the prospect of working with Shell in this innovative program to further existing techniques in the field and develop new, ground-breaking technology."

This announcement, Sweeney noted, will build on Shell’s long standing interest in biomass research and development, which have included continuous investment over the last 30 years.
