Tesco's Fresh & Easy Takes On Waste

August 24, 2007 - EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is partnering with Resource Management Group (RMG) to design a world-class recycling and waste-reduction program that will significantly reduce the amount of waste leaving stores and Fresh & Easy's distribution center, Tesco reported in a news release.

Fresh & Easy, the first entry by British retailer Tesco into the U.S. market, will recycle or reuse all of its display and shipping materials. They will be hauled back from each store to the company's centralized distribution center where it will be sorted, measured, and recycled or reused. The program creates accountability and flexibility to make an impact on reducing, reusing and recycling a significant amount of waste, Tesco stated.

"Both RMG and Fresh & Easy want to minimize our footprint on the environment," Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason said in the release. "Fresh & Easy chooses smart, capable partners who share our values. RMG is truly an extension of the Fresh & Easy team and they've developed an impressive recycling and waste-reduction program for us."

A notable feature of the program will be the reusing or recycling of all display-ready packaging, one of each store's largest waste streams. Once back at the distribution center, the display-ready packaging will be sorted and either recycled or cleaned and reused. By targeting one of the largest waste streams and reusing this packaging, Fresh & Easy said it will divert a substantial amount of waste from the landfill.

In November, Tesco's Fresh & Easy will open local, neighborhood stores committed to providing customers with fresh, healthy food in Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. Fresh & Easy is a company of Tesco, the UK's largest retailer and one of the world's leading international retailers. Tesco operates more than 2,800 stores across 12 countries.

RMG is a full-service recycling commodities and waste services company. It is headquartered in San Diego and has satellite operations in Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, N.M., and throughout Texas.
