AUSTIN, Texas -- The Southwest Car Wash Association announced this month that its annual 2003 convention and expo will be hosted at Moody Gardens Hotel and Convention Center in Galveston Texas on March 9-11.

The program will offer 12 hours of industry and financial workshops, a tour of area car washes, a 40,000-square-foot exposition floor and an annual awards banquet. Once limited to only a handful of convenience stores, automatic car washes have become fixtures at more than 10 percent of all U.S. c-stores as retailers search for other profit centers.

In other convention news, Brandweek this week reported supplier attendance was lower at this year's bi-annual Interbev convention in Atlanta. The magazine cited larger trends in the beverage business. Regional distributors and independent bottlers, along with many smaller beverage companies, have been gobbled up by majors. Also, many of these major companies are apparently twisting distributors' arms to prevent their carrying of smaller competitors. There were 510 exhibitors versus 613 during the 2000 show.
