Convenience Retailers Honored by Local Communities

SHERMAN, Texas and PITTSBURGH – Douglass Distributing, a full-line petroleum distributor and operator of 15-unit Lone Star Food Stores, and Handee Marts, an area licensee of 7-Eleven Inc., were each honored separately by the business community in their home towns of Sherman, Texas, and Pittsburgh, respectively.

Douglass Distributing won the Sherman Chamber of Commerce’s 2008 Corporate Business of the Year award at the group’s annual banquet last week. In addition, Brad Douglass, who oversees the company’s wholesale division, was voted the 2008 Business Person of the Year by the organization.

Handee Marts, based outside Pittsburgh in Gibsonia, Pa., operates 63 stores, nine of which are corporately operated, in Western Pennsylvania, Northeast Ohio, and select counties in Maryland and West Virginia. The company was named a finalist in the small company category for the 8th annual Pittsburgh Business Ethics Award.

Finalists for the award are chosen through nomination and overall reputation and are evaluated on such criteria as demonstration of executive commitment to business ethics, clear communication of ethical standards to employees, consistently high quality of products and services, and a commitment to community and charitable involvement.

The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Financial Services Professionals, along with the University of Pittsburgh David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership, annually services as sponsor and host for the awards. The Center provides judging for the event, which includes visiting the finalist companies and assembling the final judging committee.

The winner will be announced Feb. 13, at a luncheon featuring guest speaker Paul H. O’Neill, former CEO of Alcoa and Secretary of the United States Treasury.
