Community Service Spotlight: CHS, Cumberland Farms & ExxonMobil

NATIONAL REPORT -- Giving back through community service efforts and charity donations is a positive force that keeps many retailers and suppliers of this industry moving ahead. On a regular basis, Convenience Store News highlights these philanthropic efforts in this special section.

Here are the latest company spotlights:

CHS Inc.

The CHS Foundation will award $1,000 scholarships to 50 high-school students planning to study an agricultural field at a two- or four-year college. In addition, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to 25 first-year agricultural students attending a two-year college.

The application deadline is March 15. An independent, external committee will select the scholarship recipients based on essays, transcripts and reference letters.

The CHS Foundation also offers four-year university scholarships for students currently working toward an agricultural-related degree. Application deadlines vary for each participating university.

Cumberland Farms Inc.

Nearly 1,000 high-school students from the class of 2014 have applied to Cumberland Farms’ Believe and Achieve Scholarship program, which helps bright and determined young people realize their college dreams. The applications are currently being evaluated, and 130 winners will be announced this spring.

The Believe and Achieve program provides $1,000 scholarships to eligible graduating high-school seniors across the Cumberland Farms service area. This year alone, the company will award $130,000 in Believe and Achieve Scholarships to students across 11 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The Believe and Achieve program is open to any student entering a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school who lives within 30 miles of a Cumberland Farms location.

Exxon Mobil Corp.

ExxonMobil and its employees and retirees in north Texas raised more than $1.7 million for charitable organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through ExxonMobil’s annual Employees’ Favorite Charities Campaign.

The employees and retirees contributed to more than 175 charities that provide a wide range of social and educational services to residents in Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Rockwall and Tarrant counties.

Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co.

The Granville County Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of North Central North Carolina will soon have a new home, thanks to a generous gift by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. (SFNTC). The company donated its former manufacturing facility on West Street in downtown Oxford, N.C., to serve as the new Boys & Girls Club headquarters. The 59,000-square-foot building sits on 2.4 acres of land.

Speedway LLC

Cincinnati-area Speedway locations have signed on to be Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals partners. Over the next three years, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center will use the funds raised by Speedway stores to support its Complex Care Center.

The center provides 24/7 inpatient and outpatient management of children and teens with medically complex chronic disease. Most have conditions that affect multiple body systems and are often dependent on medical technology for survival.
