Clean Fuels Gain Ground at Marathon, Chevron

FINDLAY, Ohio -- Marathon Oil Corp. will convert its gasoline offering at 16 of its Midwest terminals to 100 percent ethanol blended fuel, known as E10 gasohol, beginning May 1, 2008, the company stated.

"Ethanol blended fuels help us meet the changing needs of our customers," Mary Ellen Peters, senior vice president of marketing for Marathon, said in a statement. "It also supports our nation's renewable fuels goals, which were recently increased by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to nine billion gallons of renewable fuel in 2008 and 36.0 billion gallons by 2022."

As a result, unblended gasoline products will no longer be available at Marathon terminals in Indianapolis; Muncie, Ind.; Louisville, Ky.; Detroit; Romulus, Mich.; Niles, Mich.; Bay City, Mich.; Flint, Mich.; Lansing, Mich.; Jackson, Mich.; Brecksville, Ohio; Lima, Ohio; Oregon, Ohio; Lebanon, Ohio; Cincinnati; and Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron Global Marketing launched a test program featuring Chevron Diesel with Techron D, an advanced cleaning additive specially formulated for diesel vehicles, the company stated. Techron D is a detergent additive that helps keep fuel injectors clean so that diesel engines can run at an optimal level, according to the company.

As part of the test, the ultra-low sulfur diesel product will be introduced at 48 Chevron-branded stations throughout the Sacramento area during the next few weeks, according to the company. Signage will appear at locations that highlight the availability of Chevron Diesel with Techron D in the area, while marketing efforts launching in the coming weeks to increase awareness of the product include an online campaign, enhanced point-of-purchase materials, advertising and new promotions, the company stated.

"Chevron Diesel with Techron D will help power the dieselization of America's passenger car market," Danny Roden, vice president of Chevron Global Marketing for the Americas, said in a statement. "Our retail customers in the Sacramento area will now be able to experience a new level of diesel fuel quality. Chevron Diesel with Techron D is a proud addition to Chevron's family of quality products and services and reinforces Chevron's brand position recognized by consumers as being clean and reliable."

The launch was a response to the expected growth of light-duty diesel passenger vehicles, which are more fuel efficient and can produce lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional gasoline vehicles, the company stated.

"Next-generation diesel cars are cleaner, quieter, more efficient and more powerful than ever, thanks to the latest technologies in engine design and emissions control," Shariq Yosufzai, president of Chevron Global Marketing, said in a statement. "The North American diesel passenger vehicle market is expected to grow rapidly and Chevron is positioned to be the leader in high-quality diesel to help enable this growth."
