Live From Nielsen Consumer 360: Mars Talks Treats vs. Snacks

LAS VEGAS — Where is the candy and snacks category headed in years to come?

In an interview with Progressive Grocer, a sister publication of Convenience Store News, at this week’s Nielsen Consumer 360 conference in Las Vegas, Mars Chocolate North America President Tracey Massey answered this question, while also discussing the importance of taste, the difference between a treat and a snack, and what trends are driving new product innovation.

“Definitely that lighter eat is what seems to be appealing to consumers right now,” Massey said, noting that Mars Chocolate is putting a focus on lower calorie counts, while still delivering great taste. Recent examples include M&M’S Pretzel, a 150-calorie product, and Snickers Crisper at 190 calories.

Taking place June 27-29, Nielsen Consumer 360 is an annual conference that seeks to connect consumer trends across industries. Respected thought leaders and industry experts share their experiences to help attendees better understand the rapidly changing landscapes of advertising, media and retail, as well as digital, technology, and more. This year’s conference explored disruptions that are affecting different industries and creating a compelling need to innovate and transform.
