Several C-store Chains Win Local Business Honors

VERC, Parker’s, Weigel’s and Jiffy Mart receive accolades.

NATIONAL REPORT — Convenience stores continue to show they are among the best innovators, with several industry chains recently receiving awards and distinctions.

    VERC Enterprises Inc.

VERC Enterprises was named to Boston Business Journal’s Book of Lists as one of the area’s largest family-owned businesses.

The book provides a unique source to track the progress of local sectors and the key companies within them; ranking is based on 2014 revenue.

“Our fine team is the key to our many years of success,” said Leo Vercollone, CEO of VERC Enterprises. “To be named in the Boston Business Journal’s prestigious Book of Lists is a credit to our entire staff.”

    Parker's Convenience Stores

Savannah, Ga.-based Parker’s was named Best Convenience Store in the Savannah Morning News Readers’ Choice Awards, the Statesboro Herald “Best in the ‘Boro” Awards and the Bryan County Now “Best of Bryan” Awards.

This marks the third year in a row that Parker’s has been honored by Savannah Morning News readers.

"To earn this acclaim from our customers in Savannah, Statesboro and Richmond Hill is the ultimate honor," said Parker’s President and CEO Greg Parker. "Everything we do at Parker’s is focused on exceeding customer expectations, from our store design to our fresh-brewed sweet tea and signature Chewy Ice. We’re truly humbled to receive such a sweeping endorsement from our loyal customers."

Parker’s was also recently honored as the Best Convenience Store by readers of Savannah Magazine and the Island Packet on Hilton Head Island, S.C. In addition, the convenience store company has earned the title of “Most Fab Convenience Store” from the Effingham Herald in Rincon, Ga., and been recognized with a Keep Liberty Beautiful Award by the Coastal Courier in Hinesville, Ga.

Tennesee-based convenience store retailer Weigel’s has long been known for its milk and the 63-store chain has yet another award to show for it. Weigel’s was honored with a blue ribbon for its chocolate milk at the 2015 Tennessee State Fair. The company won the same award in 2011 and 2014.

The Tennessee State Fair selected Weigel’s Chocolate Milk from many entrants in the whole milk, chocolate milk class. The entrants competed in the areas of appearance, color, body, texture and flavor. A point system was used for each category, and the total number of points determined the first-place blue ribbon winner.

    Jiffy Mart

Tevis Oil’s Jiffy Mart c-store division received a Carroll County, Md., Chamber of Commerce award in the category of Small Business of the Year with 51-200 employees.

Jiffy Mart has been recognized with this award four times in the past five years.

In 2014, the company was also awarded at the state level by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, recognized as Small Business of the Year.
