7-Eleven Signs on ExxonMobil Exec for Store Ops

DALLAS -- 7-Eleven Inc. hired industry veteran Darren Rebelez to replace John Harris, the senior vice president of store operations, who will be retiring in early 2008, the company reported.

"Darren is a proven talent in both operations and merchandising, and his solid leadership skills have allowed him to build strong teams and forge close relationships with suppliers and vendors across our industry," Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO, said in a written statement. "We are excited to have him join our team as he will be a valuable asset to our organization. We will benefit from his extensive convenience retailing background and experience, and I know he shares and believes in our approach to servant leadership and our vision to be the best retailer of convenience."

Rebelez, whose appointment is effective July 23, will spend extensive time training in-store and learning the company's systems and processes while working closely with Harris to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities. Upon Harris' retirement, Rebelez will assume all responsibilities of the position.

Rebelez comes to 7-Eleven from ExxonMobil, where he was the head of franchising for its On-the-Run convenience retail and franchise business. In addition, he led ExxonMobil's U.S. Distributor Fuels Pricing organization and was also head of category management in the U.S. Prior to joining ExxonMobil, Rebelez held positions with Thornton Oil Corp. as its vice president of merchandising. There he oversaw strategic planning, category management and marketing for the company's c-store chain.

In other 7-Eleven news, July 11 marks the 80th birthday of 7-Eleven Canada, and to celebrate, the chain will give away 463,000 free Slurpees across Canada, the Ponoka News reported. Each store will hand out more than 1,000 of the frozen carbonated beverages in 7.11-ounce cups.

The giveaway is one of the largest single-day product giveaways in Canada, according to the report.

Canadians drink approximately 2.35 million Slurpees per month, totaling more than 28 million Slurpees annually.
