7-Eleven, Circle K Celebrate New Year's With Free Coffee

NEW YORK -- Trading champagne for caffeine, two convenience store chains are celebrating New Year's Eve with free coffee and hot beverages for customers in select markets.

In Austin and the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, metro areas, along with Arizona, Colorado, Utah and southern Nevada, participating 7-Eleven stores will ring in the new year with free 12-ounce cups of joe or other hot beverages from midnight to 6 a.m., Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, according to a press release by 7-Eleven posted on dBusinessNews.com. Stores offering the free drinks will display an 8.5 by 11-inch card on counters with information about the program.

This year marks the 22nd time the convenience store chain will give patrons free hot beverages, including hot teas, cappuccino and hot chocolate, according to the release.

The offer is also available in Denver, according to The Denver Post, which reported the giveaway was originally designed to help combat the increase in drowsy driving, but now serves as an end-of-year thank you to customers.

"A lot of people stay up later than they are used to on New Year's Eve, and a hot cup of coffee may make their drive home safer," Rick Wilshe, 7-Eleven category manager for hot beverages, said in a statement. "We also want to thank our customers who have made 7-Eleven coffee so popular."

Meanwhile, Circle K Southeast stores promoted its New Year's free coffee giveaway on Twitter and Facebook. From 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 12 p.m. Jan. 1, stores in North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina, and select sites in Alabama, will hand out free 24-ounce coffee.
